    From memory not verified:

    Doesn't CREATE INDEX update pg_statistics? I think it does so
    the faked statistics only cause different joins to happen  as
    long  as  there  is no index created immediately after CREATE
    TABLE (HASHJOIN vs. NESTLOOP).
