Well, this discussion veering off into ISN has certainly validated my gut feel that I should touch only the minimum number of things that kills my pain points, rather than trying any more ambitious restructuring. I hope that packaged extensions become so popular that some serious cutting can happen to contrib, especially the data type additions.
