Why dont' you use prepare and execute in case you are using DBI
same program is like this.
$dbh = DBI -> connect ( "......");
$sth = $dbh -> prepare("insert into tab (a,b) values (?,?)");
$sth -> execute($a , $b );
$sth -> finish();
$dbh -> commit();
$dbh -> disconnect();
