running Postgresql on Mandrake 7.0

I have install the RPMs at came with my Mandrake distribution, but when
I try to connect I get a postmaster error.  So, how do I get the
postmaster running?  Or better yet, just what do I do after installing
the RPMs?  I have tried to find the answer in the documentation, but
they are written for a binary or source installation.  Any suggestions?
