I don't know which is cleaner:

ls /core* && mv /tmp/core* /tmp/cores

find / -maxdepth 1 -type f -name 'core*' -print0 |
	xargs -r0 mv -vt /tmp/cores

for a in /core*; do [ ! -e "$a" ] || mv "$a" /tmp/cores; done
