  1. BUG #1320: 7.3.8 server RPM has file error

    PostgreSQL Bugs List <pgsql-bugs@postgresql.org> — 2004-11-16T00:55:48Z

The following bug has been logged online:

    Bug reference: 1320
    Logged by: Simon Riggs

    Email address: simon@2ndquadrant.com

    PostgreSQL version: 7.3.7

    Operating system: Fedora Core 1

Description: 7.3.8 server RPM has file error

    Details:

    Installing postgresql-server-7.3.8-2PGDG.i686.rpm,
    I get the following error:
error: unpacking of archive failed on file
    /usr/lib/pgsql/utf8_and_gb18030.so;41994c83: cpio: read

7.3.7 RPMs install fine, no problems, runs fine: same site for download...
    etc

The same error on the 7.3.8 version happens on both UK mirror sites, and a
US mirror site. [While there I notice: US download was faster than either UK
    site, wget-> UK system]

Digging around, it seems that for 7.3.7 and 7.4.5, the naming convention was
    *v.v.v-1PGDG* for FC1 and *v.v.v-2PGDG* for FC2. I notice that for 7.3.8 and
7.4.6 both FC1 and FC2 RPMs use the naming convention *v.v.v-2PGDG*. This
may be a red herring, since the file *2PGDG* also fails using FC2 on a
    separate system.

Oh, and the bug report web form won't let me use 7.3.8 or 7.4.6 yet.

Hmmm...think I'll try the source build now.

Umm, I've tried installing those rpms on two different servers, but didn't
    get that error.

Are you sure that you've downloaded in right form? Did you double check
    the md5sums of the packages?

...or could you please try another mirror?

The number before PGDG tag defines the build number actually. If, in a
way, there is a problem while building the RPM, we bump up the spec file
and bump up build number version and rebuild the rpm.

    Thanks, fixed.

You removed this sentence I wrote from your reply:

The same error on the 7.3.8 version happens on both UK mirror sites, and
a US mirror site. [While there I notice: US download was faster than
either UK site, wget-> UK system]

=> I tried 3 sites, with identical errors, before reporting this.

Checked the md5sum, which checks also- so not a security problem.

Not sure what else to say. What could be different between *7* and *8*
    RPMs?

    Devrim,

I've just realised that you *have* made a change to the 7.3.8 RPMs for
Fedore Core 1...you've updated the readme.

Referring to the readme...My problem was the RPMs didn't install, not
that I couldn't get them to run.

AFAICS the 7.3.8 RPMs for FC1 are just not operable.

Any change in sight? (This setup is not for *me*....)

    I *currently* do not have a FC1 for a test :-( I've tested FC1 RPMs on
FC3, they worked, but it's not enough...

If you can, could you please rebuild

    ftp://ftp6.tr.postgresql.org/postgresql/binary/v7.3.8/srpms/fedora/fedora-core-3/postgresql-7.3.8-3PGDG.src.rpm
(or from any mirror near you)

on FC1 and look what's happening?

    Thanks,

Ahhhh! Happily, I've not done that before. I either build from source,
if people let me, or use the supplied/keyed RPMs.

Withdrawing ungracefully...it's not anything I'd want to do right now,
since I would also have to support that for the community as a whole.
That would be a commitment I can't make right now.

Again: I do appreciate your own efforts in that area.
