backend terminates

I removed my old 6.3 DB and called initdb. After starting postmaster I tried
to create a user to no avail:

gauss:~> createuser meskes
PQexec() -- Request was sent to backend, but backend closed the channel
before responding.
        This probably means the backend terminated abnormally before or
while processing the request.
createuser: database access failed.
