Some answers on database sizes, if this is any help...
I did "du -sh /usr/share/zoneinfo/" on them all.

OpenBSD 3.1, sparc64:
1.3M /usr/share/zoneinfo/

Linux, i686, oldish mandrake (6.x?), glibc 2.1.3:
478k /usr/share/zoneinfo

Linux, i686, newish redhat 7.2, glibc 2.2.4:
4.9M /usr/share/zoneinfo

Linux, alpha EV56, oldish redhat 6.2, glibc 2.1.3
1.4M /usr/share/zoneinfo
